Let ranks run their department
Give a rank department permissions so its holders run their own department without a community-wide role.
A rank can carry department permissions. They work only inside that rank's own department, so a Sheriff can run BCSO without any community-wide role.
Give a rank permissions
- Open the department in CMS, Departments, then the Ranks tab.
- In the Department permissions column, tick what the rank may do. Department head ticks all eight.
- Save. It takes effect at once for everyone with a current seat at that rank.
Department roles bundle these into named jobs such as Recruitment or Training, so you rarely edit them rank by rank.
What a head can and can't do
- Run the department's page, documents, roster, promotions, applications, leave, discipline and certifications, depending on what the rank holds.
- Act only on members whose rank sits strictly below their own, never on another head, the owner or an admin.
- Never change the department's structure: ranks, name, type or join codes.
Each permission and every rule: Reference › Permissions.
Heads can also change ranks below their own from Manage, Department roles, Rank permissions. Ranks they can't change show "You can't change this rank".
Heads and the public page
Whether heads also edit their public department page is a switch on Admin, Modules. See Let department heads edit their page.
What a new community gets
The top two ranks of each department except Civilian are head ranks, and other Command ranks review applications. For BCSO that is Sheriff and Undersheriff as heads, and Lieutenant and Captain reviewing applications.
Manage your own department
A head opening Manage gets the CMS department editor for their own department, with community sections locked. Another department's editor returns not allowed. Applications and documents show only the department's scope.
